PDFs
Scans and slide decks that are too big to email become small enough to send. Text and vector drawings stay sharp: only the images inside the PDF are reduced.
PDFs need Ghostscript. squish offers to install it the first time (brew install ghostscript, or sudo apt install ghostscript on Linux).
#The question
| Choice | Images inside | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Balanced | 150 dpi | crisp on screen, fine to print at home |
| Strong | 72 dpi | smallest, for screens only |
| Gentle | 300 dpi | print quality |
#Good to know
- Duplicate images are stored once and fonts are compressed, which helps a lot with slide decks.
- A PDF made mostly of text is often already small: squish then copies the original.
- Password-protected PDFs can't be compressed. The reason is written to
.squish-errors.login the output folder.
