#The questions
| Question | Choices |
|---|---|
| Audio format? | MP3, plays everywhere · AAC (.m4a), great on Apple devices, a bit better than MP3 · Opus, smallest for the quality, for modern apps and browsers |
| Quality? | Balanced, music sounds great · Strong, smallest, perfect for voice, podcasts and memos · Gentle, high quality |
Opus is offered when your FFmpeg supports it.
#Bitrates
| Balanced | Strong | Gentle | |
|---|---|---|---|
| MP3 | 160 kbps | 96 kbps | 256 kbps |
| AAC | 128 kbps | 80 kbps | 192 kbps |
| Opus | 96 kbps | 48 kbps | 160 kbps |
A CD-quality WAV uses about 1,411 kbps, so Balanced MP3 is roughly 9 times smaller. An MP3 that is already at a low bitrate won't shrink: squish copies it as it is.
